The boys from the Guitar Ensemble have been invited back to play at the ANZAC Village in Narrabeen. On August 28th we’re bringing the College Choir with us. The students will be out of school from 8:45am until the start of recess at 11am.
The boys of Guitar Ensemble and some selected soloists will be performing for the dads on August 31. The musicians are asked to be there at 6:55am for setup ad sound check. Music to commence at 7:25am.
All musicians at the St Augustine’s College are getting together to perform for the community in our biggest night of the year. The Festival Showcase concert is held on the last night of the Festival (September 7 @ 7pm in the Brimson Centre). Every band, choir, and ensemble is playing in this huge extravaganza. The night will also include performances for selected soloists from the Solo Recitals from Monday, and the winners of Rock in the Quad. Entry is free. All students are asked to be there at 6:30 for a pre-talk and sound check/warmup.
We are proud to announce that all of our Jazz groups at the College have been selected to perform at this year’s Manly Jazz Festival. The internationally acclaimed Manly Jazz is known worldwide for its beautiful location and the diversity of music it presents, from traditional New Orleans jazz to funk, Latin, fusion, blues, gospel, swing and roots - with performances in multiple indoor and outdoor venues including major stages alongside the world famous Manly beach.
This year our boys will be performing in three locations:
Saturday 29th September Stage Band 2 (Stars of the Future stage)
Sunday 30th September Junior and Senior Jazz Ensemble (Roaming)
Monday 1st October Stage Band 1 (St Matthews Church)
Please contact Joseph Montz or your conductor if you have any questions or would like to inform us of your son’s absence.

Year 11 Music Soiree Report
Last Tuesday evening, Year 11 Music students presented their second Soiree for the year. Students performed works representing topics, ‘Theatre Music’ (Musical Theatre focus) and ‘Music for radio, film, TV & multimedia. There was a great diversity of works presented on an equally varied array of instruments and voice. It was pleasing to see that significant progress has been made with each student’s performance abilities, particularly in terms of technique.
Aside from the great value of performing in a formal concert setting, the learning experience went beyond the stage to the classroom where the boys reflected on their work in completing a heavily scaffolded self-critical appraisal. This process was both enlightening yet confronting, and when students implement change based on their personal constructive critique, significant improvement generally follows. Both the Soiree performance and self-critical appraisal are assessable components.
The success of the soiree resulted from the students’ high level of preparedness and this was of course facilitated by the huge effort of the Music staff. Special thanks to Faith Ling, Lynne Papahatzis, Brian Sinclair and the Music Tuition staff for their professionalism, input and efforts.
Well done, Year 11 Music!

The festival opens on with Year 12 Music Showcase, where our Music 1, Music 2 and Music Extension students will present their HSC performance programs in concert. I extend an invitation to all members of the College community to attend in support of this talented group of students, but please bear in mind that there are limited tickets and they are selling fast, so get in early. Booking can be made through https://www.trybooking.com/XPMT. Year 12 Music Showcase will be held 6.00-10.00pm on Friday evening 31 August and it will be in a dinner/show format. It is worth noting that this particular event is an invaluable learning experience for all Years 9-11 Elective Music students and for those considering choosing Music as an HSC subject in the future. For more information, please contact Alan Caulfield (Faculty Coordinator Music) Caulfield.a@saint.aug.nsw.edu.au

A key event of the College Music Festival is the Solo Recitals, where our private music tuition and elective music students have the opportunity to perform in a formal concert setting. The College has engaged esteemed professionals for the event to provide students with valuable feedback and adjudication in each instrumental and vocal section. It is anticipated that all College musicians will participate in the Solo Recitals, performing an own choice piece and they will be adjudicated in year groups levels. Solo Recitals will be held 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Monday 3 September (Week 7) and the following sections being offered:
It gives me great pleasure to announce this year’s Solo Recital adjudicators: Brendan Collins – Woodwind and Brass; John Morrison – Bass & Drums; Rod McCormack – Guitar, and; Gregg Arthur – Voice and Keyboards.
The Music Faculty are very much looking forward to working with the boys in preparation for this prestigious event. For more information and application forms, please contact Lynne Papahatzis (Music Department Administrative Assistant) Lpapahatzis@saintaug.nsw.edu.au.
Considerable time is given in classroom Music lessons to the most creative aspect of music, and that is composition. With an aim of refining their composing and creative skills, a number of students have taken the additional opportunity of participating in Composition Club; it takes place lunchtime on Mondays. Those avid composers and song writers, and all other creative students are strongly encouraged to enter a piece in the festival’s Composition Competition.
This year’s Composition Competition format has changed slightly. Two sections will be offered; the first for rock, pop and electronic music, and; the second is for Art music (Classical and Jazz). Although students of all Year Levels will be adjudicated together, each works will be assessed on their merit in terms of the composer’s Year Level. Composition Competition presentations will take place at the Music Festival Week Gala Showcase on Friday 7 September. For more information and application forms, please contact

One of the more popular Music Festival Week events is Rock in the Quad. This is a lunchtime concert series for contemporary music performance in genres such as rock, pop, folk and jazz rock music. Soloists, duos and small groups are all welcome to participate.
The Rock in the Quad schedule generally fills up very quickly, so any students interested should get in and see Joe Montz Jmontz@saintaug.nsw.edu.au as soon as possible.
As is the tradition, Music Festival Week culminates with the Music Showcase concert, where all Cocurricular Music groups and select section winners from the Solo Recitals will be featured. It will be held on Friday 7 September in Brimson Hall. As with all Music Festival Week events, an invitation is extended to the whole community, to come and see Saints Music and spirit in full flight.
It is with great anticipation that we await Music Festival Week 2018 and we look forward to seeing our students’ crescendo throughout this term as all things musical build in intensity!
