Mark Taylor Shield Final
On Tuesday 4th December St Augustine’s played Christian Brothers Lewisham in the final of the 2018 Mark Taylor Shield. The team were lucky enough play the game at St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill on their number 1 oval, which looked an absolute treat on the day. To play on a turf wicket in primary school cricket is a rarity, let alone one of the quality of St Joseph’s number 1.
Captain Will Brewster lost the toss and we were asked to bat first on what looked to be a good wicket. After an early set back, our top order batsmen started in a positive manner, batting patiently, while punishing anything loose from the Lewisham bowlers.
Will Elliot (17), Gus Anderson (31) and Will Brewster (30) all made solid contributions to team’s total. At the 20 over mark we were in a great position at 2-118. Some good middle order contributions from Caleb Conners (12), Oscar McFarland (10) and Nick Verano (11) took the teams tally to 164 at the end of the 30 overs.
The Christian Brothers innings started in a positive manner with the second and third wicket partnerships both reaching 40 runs. At 2-83 after 20 overs the game looked to be in the balance. However, some tight bowling from all the St Augustine’s meant that Lewisham would only reach 122 with the wickets been shared amongst all the bowlers.
Congratulations to coaches Mr Scholtens and Mr Thompson and their team on a fantastic achievement. I’m sure all the boys will look back with fond memories in the years to come.
