Goal of Education
The goal of any teacher, school and education system is undoubtedly to cultivate a love of learning in their students. When this is achieved, students pay attention and are mindfully connected to themselves and their teacher. This enables the students to actively listen with a sense of wonderment and awe, which in turn creates classes which are places of adventure, experimentation and exploration. It is in such classes that students thrive, and flourish and it is where learning is about wonder and excitement, not merely a transfer of knowledge.
For nearly a decade, the relentless pursuit of literacy and numeracy through standardised testing, has seen insufficient time allocated to building young peoples’ social-emotional resilience, wellbeing and ethical mindsets. In partnership and in community with the most important educators of the boys, parents have a vital role in developing social and emotional intelligence, empathy and resilience in their modelling of such behaviours at home and in their relationships with their children, each other and with their teachers. For as Howard Gardner says, “I have nothing against excellence, but at the end of the day, the world doesn’t need more of the brightest and the best, but more of those of good character.”
