On Wednesday 12th September Year 12 Chemistry students at the College undertook a full day of Chemistry as they participated in the Intensive Revision course delivered by Bronwen Hegarty.
Bronwen has tremendous experience in HSC Chemistry having been Head of Department, Chemistry teacher, HSC marker and examination paper author. Bronwen has also produced resources to accompany both the old and new syllabi for HSC Chemistry and is constantly in demand in the Independent Schools at this time of year. She is renowned for her clear, concise delivery of the subject material and her wealth of knowledge in tackling the more complex areas of the Chemistry course. Bronwen’s arrival was eagerly anticipated by the boys, as they were keen to meet the author of the study material, topic tests and calculations that they had been utilising in their study of HSC Chemistry.
The students involved participated in a variety of activities aimed at unpacking the more difficult concepts and importantly, how to structure answers to address the all-important verbs in the extended response sections of the HSC examination. They were given opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge through targeted questioning and whole class and small group discussion, receiving immediate and constructive feedback on their answers. They were also given information on the most up to date methods used to identify and name organic compounds-always a tricky concept and subject of debate among Chemists.
In addition, each student received a resource pack that included a range of questions from each of the Core topics as well as the Option and summary revision notes covering all of the course content. All participants agreed that the day was extremely useful in aiding their revision, clarifying misunderstandings and motivating study following their trial examination.
