Old Boy Sean Murphy wins bronze in the 2018 U23 World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland.
Racing in the Under 23 Lightweight Men's Single Scull Sean worked his way through heats, quarter-finals, semis and then to the A final. He was faced with head winds for all the races except the finals, where with his grit and determination he edged out 29 competitors to secure the bronze medal.
Sean started rowing in 2012 while in Year 10. Under the dedicated and experienced guidance of our own ex-Olympian rowing coaches Matthias and Judith Ungemach he went on to compete successfully at State and National levels. And although invited to join the National Training Centre after he finished school Sean chose to stay in Sydney under the watchful eye of Matt, and continued training at his local club Mosman so he could finish his physiotherapy degree.
Prior to his success at the two recent 2018 World Championship events Sean represented Australia in the Junior World Rowing Championships in 2016 in the coxless four along with Saints Old Boy Zac von Appen. Zac also raced at the 2018 Worlds in the Men's Coxed Four coming in sixth place in the A Final of that event.
Congratulations Sean and Zac on your success!! Here’s to many more medals and a continuing career in this great sport.
The rowing season kicks off again in a few weeks. With our boys continuing to train hard over winter, as well as some emerging talent already identified in the new intake of rowers it’s a very exciting time for St Augustine’s Rowing.
