The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. Saint Augustine

Throughout Term 2, The English Faculty has run two Wide Reading initiatives relating to the FIFA World Cup in Russia. Ms Lewis and the librarians have supported the faculty in this effort by categorising and selecting novels according to the five World Cup confederations. The first initiative involves students attempting to read a novel set in a country from each of the five confederations competing in the 2018 World Cup. Many Year 7 students have successfully undertaken this challenge, reading novels during class reading time, designated library lessons and in their own time.

It has been wonderful to see the boys discuss issues that are raised by their novels and learn about different cultures and regions of the world whilst engaging in healthy competition. The second initiative promotes reading at the beginning of English lessons in Years 7-10 by providing students with a range of short stories from a different World Cup confederation each week. The most rewarding aspect of this initiative is to observe students discovering reading as a portal for exploring the world.
