At St Augustine's College, we are blessed with a diverse and talented mix of women on our staff. A reflection on why we should celebrate International Women's Day...
Last week was International Women's Day. It is an important global event that takes place on 8 March every year. The day celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, and it calls for gender equality and women's rights.

“International Women's Day is an important moment to reflect on the progress made towards gender equality and to call out the persistent barriers that women face in realizing their full potential. It is a day to celebrate the achievements of women, and to renew our commitment to building a more just and equitable world for all." - Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women.
The themes for International Women’s Day are linked to the priorities of the 67th #UN Commission on the Status of Women, which has a long list of goals and projects. The UN global theme this year is Cracking the Code: Innovation for a gender equal future’. This theme highlights the role that bold, transformative ideas, inclusive technologies, and accessible education can play in combatting discrimination and the marginalisation of women globally.
A reflection on why we should celebrate International Women’s Day.
- Education on Gender Equality: Celebrating IWD in schools can help raise awareness about gender equality and women's rights. It can provide an opportunity to educate students about the progress made towards gender equality and the work that still needs to be done.
- Inspire young girls: Celebrating IWD can also inspire young girls to pursue their dreams and aspirations, regardless of their gender. It can help them see the potential of women and inspire them to break down the barriers that limit their opportunities.
- Encourage gender balance: Schools can use IWD to encourage gender balance in all aspects of life. This can include promoting equal representation of men and women in leadership roles, challenging gender stereotypes and biases, and empowering both boys and girls to work towards gender equality.
- Celebrate women’s achievements: IWD is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of women in different fields such as science, technology, arts, and politics. By celebrating women's contributions, schools can help promote a more inclusive and diverse community.
International Women’s Day is a reminder to us all of the importance of actively supporting and embracing equity within our own sphere of influence. We all have an important responsibility to play in challenging gender stereotypes, calling out discrimination, drawing attention to bias and seeking inclusion. As educators and staff, remember the power of role-modelling and holding yourself and others to a high account.
At Saints we are blessed with a diverse and talented mix of women in our staff. I encourage you to take some time to reflect on, and celebrate, the women in your life who make a difference.
