2022 saw the launch of our new and dynamic 2022 – 2026 Strategic Plan. This Plan assists the College with decision-making, responsiveness and innovation. It assists us to remain agile during times of change, and also helps define what we intend to achieve when it comes to student outcomes along with our greater community goals.
Our Plan looks to engage each dimension of our community, to bring focus and talents to the development of our Annual Improvement Plans and to give life to our journey of improvement.
As most would be aware, our current Strategic Plan had full community input in its development and continues to have when developing our annual targets. The input of students, staff, parents, Leadership Team, alumni and College Board continues to be central to the development and execution of the Strategic Annual Implementation Targets each year.
The symbolical use of the round table with our Augustinian icons focuses our intent as a Catholic Augustinian school. Each stakeholder group, represented by a seat at the table, now has explicit opportunities to contribute to and influence the growth and improvement of St Augustine’s College.
As you review our foci and strategic intents, you will notice that our Leadership Team, Student Leaders, our parents, alumni, College Board and staff are all engaged to clearly determine how they will, as a group, contribute to the accomplishment of targeted improvement.
As you explore our 2022-2026 Strategic Plan microsite, you will see evidence of how each of our stakeholders provided indicators of our 2022 success, those deliberately developed, implemented and evaluated changes that each stakeholder group has driven.
In our context as a Catholic Augustinian school, we believe it takes a community to develop understanding and engagement to add value to the journey of each graduate.
We believe that boys must be prepared for life. Their involvement in school improvement will see them appreciate how they contribute to, operate in, and succeed in a globalised world. The development of this plan is an expression of how we take a holistic perspective and focus on influencing and inspiring a new generation of young men to make informed decisions regarding their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
Being part of the St Augustine’s College community involves partnerships, both long and short-term. Our strategic plan enables us to move beyond the current successes and to bring creative and new ideas that add value to our community, ensuring we forge meaningful relationships.
Please read about our 2022 Indicators of Progress for each of our Strategic Foci by accessing this link: Strategic Plan.

Student HSC Readiness Check for Year 10 into Year 11
The College has developed a Student HSC Readiness Check for boys in Year 10 going into Year 11. The aim of the Readiness check is to help teachers understand and support the boys as they prepare for the HSC. In saying this, we also acknowledge that boys in these senior years, have many options on how they wish to pursue a career pathway.
The Readiness Check has been discussed with Year 10 boys at their Year Group meeting and a parent/guardian letter with detailed information was issued this week via the SAC App. It was also shared with the Parents & Friends Association where it received very positive feedback. The first of the checks has commenced this week and will continue into next week.
If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact your son’s Head of House.

Enrolment Interviews | Our Point of Difference | Merit Awards | Prayer
The College is currently conducting enrolment interviews for Year 5 boys commencing in 2025. Interviewing these boys and their families is one of the many enjoyable tasks I undertake each year. Listening to the parents and the boys speak so positively about the reputation we have as a community-focused College, reminds me that our primary and core business is about developing loving, nurturing, and forgiving relationships. From these foundational gospel and scripture values, boys can grow into young men of heart, integrity and humility; cornerstones of an Augustinian education. We also offer a rigorous educational program (within the top seventy schools for HSC results over the last 7 years), a Creative and Performing Arts program with boys involved in yearly plays with Stella Maris, and a Sport and Co-curricular program that caters for the individual talents and abilities of all students.
The College is very excited at the current levels of interest in St Augustine’s as the school of choice for your sons. With a proud history of educating boys for close to 70 years, I thought I would take this opportunity to proudly promote what we currently offer in the Primary School at St Augustine’s.

Student Leadership Afternoon | 26 May College Assembly Speech
STUDENT LEADERSHIP AFTERNOON
On Wednesday 24 May, we hosted a Saints Student Leadership Afternoon, which included 30 other school leaders from around the area, to discuss leadership and issues facing the youth today. To get straight to the point – it was so much fun! Starting off with icebreaker games, it was a great opportunity to reach out and get to know other students in Year 12. We then held a group discussion session where we split up into different areas. We all had the chance to talk with others about a range of topics: What is your progress as a leadership team? What is the legacy you wish to leave? How is your school striving to implement Child Safe Standards? And what is the biggest issue your leadership team has faced this year?
It was really insightful to hear what a diverse crew of people thought. Sharing perspectives from people from private schools to public schools, and co-education to single-sex, helped open the eyes of our boys to a greater experience of youth around us. To finish it off, we had a salsa dancing session led by the one and only resident expert, Mr Barbour. It was a mixture of hilarity and pure bliss as we watched our mates and newly made friends struggle and excel with the dancing.
I'd just like to take a moment to thank all the teachers who made this evening possible which gave us boys such a great opportunity to meet fellow school leaders. Thanks to the persistent Ms Earle for devising and working with us to make this evening come to fruition. Also, thanks to Ms Lyall, Ms Davis, Mr Barbour, Mr Burke, Mr Wickham, and Mr Byrne. It was a fantastic afternoon, and I've only heard positive reviews from everyone else.
MAX'S SPEECH AT TODAY'S COLLEGE ASSEMBLY (FRIDAY 26 MAY 2023), FOLLOWING A PRESENTATION BY ZALI STEGGALL OAM MP, FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WARRINGAH
Good morning, Mr Byrne, Father Senan, The Honourable Zali Steggall, Member for Warringah, staff, and boys.
It’s quite the privilege having Zali here today – taking the time out of her busy schedule – to talk to us about her role in shaping and enhancing voices around the country. Voice is a very important part of this College so it’s a given that we acknowledge and support those people who can’t be heard.
Starting tomorrow Reconciliation Week begins. It’s a time for reflection, understanding, and unity. It’s a time when we reflect on the dispossession of Indigenous Australians’ cultural identity and move forwards in mutual respect and understanding. Looking back at these dark pages of our history book, the process of assimilation stripped many Indigenous peoples of their familial backgrounds.
This really made me think. Imagine who
you would be if you didn’t know your family, your heritage, or the stories you come from. Humans are storytellers. It fundamentally underpins who we are. In the modern world, it can be easy to lose sight of your stories – of your family’s stories.
You see, the tales we tell, especially those from our families, are more than just idle chatter or old folklores to fill a quiet room; they are the threads that weave the tapestry of our identities, connecting us to our roots and giving us a sense of continuity in a rapidly changing world.
Each of us carries an archive of memories, experiences, and values. In sharing these stories, we bridge the gap between generations, build an understanding of our past, and provide a context for our future.
Picture your grandparents' place. Picture your stories with them or even the stories they’ve told you. I can picture right now talking to my Pa who served in Vietnam and him showing me the trays and silverware he has as he cheekily grins to me and tells me that he stole them from some Americans during his service.
He - for one - has had many stories – some of which he’s only promised to tell me when I’m 18. But recently I’ve started to realise the importance of these stories. There will be a time when we grow old and forget our own stories, and unfortunately, that’s the point he’s at. Having dementia means that he doesn’t quite have the quick memory he used to – and it often does mean he repeats the same story 500 times – like the story of how he met my grandmother.
Moving forwards, there will be many of his stories that will be lost to memory and time. I’m sure I’m not the only one here in this room that faces the same problem. So be sure to ask your parents, your grandparents, uncles, aunties, and relatives what their stories are – before they are forgotten.
In our family histories, there are heroes and villains, comedies and dramas, successes, and failures. Each story contains a lesson, an insight, a touch of wisdom that is uniquely ours. So, let’s never underestimate the importance of these tales.
I urge all of you to dive into the treasure troves of your family stories. Your families are people who will always be there for you and trust me you'll have a laugh, discover lessons, and maybe even a little inspiration.
In the end, remember this: We are our stories. They are the narratives that bind us together. They may not always be grand, but they are the unpolished narratives of our lives. So, cherish them, share them, learn from them. Bring them back to life before they are forgotten.
Thank you.
**Note for all the parents reading this: do the same! Talk to your boys about your histories and the experiences of your parents.

Ms Steggall explored important contemporary issues for our students to consider as they reflect on our nation and their place in it.
Consent Education
We host our last guest speaker sessions with Year 9 this Friday as part of our AWE Framework.
Established in 2015, the external providers Elephant Ed have been delivering consent, respectful relationships, and sexuality education across Australia. Elephant Ed sends youthful, relatable and highly trained facilitators to deliver interactive, informative and engaging workshops to schools, universities and community groups. We had positive feedback from their inaugural session last year:
Students who gave a thumbs up: 99%
Students who want Elephant Ed to return: 93%
Students who found it useful having a young facilitator: 97%
The evidence-based, age-appropriate workshops are tried and tested across all relevant age groups and are mapped to State and National curriculum guidelines. Every year, they take pride in empowering tens of thousands of young people to make informed, positive and safe decisions about sexuality, relationships and growing up.
As parents and carers of young men, this issue is an important one that we often feel least equipped to address. I recommend the following episodes of these popular podcasts if you wanted to do some further engagement with thinking in this area.
WARNING: the language in these episodes is explicit in relation to subject matter.
28 May: Pentecost Sunday and Parish Youth Mass at St Kieran’s Parish Manly Vale, 6pm.

Shine Conference
A small group of students ventured to the Central Coast on Friday to attend the Shine Youth Conference at St Peter’s College Tuggerah. For all boys, it was a day of encounter, questioning, listening and praying about the big questions we all have about the world.
They were lucky enough to hear from Fr Rob Galea, the talented young priest who spreads the Gospel with music and preaching.
The boys participated in Breakout Sessions such as the ‘Synergy of Religion and Science’, ‘Spirituality through Dancing’, and ‘Music and Faith’. It was a wonderful opportunity to share the experience with our brothers and sisters from Stella Maris and St Paul’s Colleges.
Creative & Performing Arts
Year 9 Visual Arts
PDM (Photography and Digital Media) Light Painting Photography Workshop
Our Year 9 PDM students enjoyed a Friday evening workshop with acclaimed photographer, Peter Solness. Peter has developed a technique he calls “Light Painting” which involves long exposure photography while lighting night-time scenes with a variety of lights and torches.
“We were introduced to long exposure, light painting and some more advanced compositional techniques. It was an enjoyable experience for the whole group and I would definitely do it again.”
Charlie - Year 9 PDM student
“Our PDM class had the chance to take beautiful photos with Peter Solness, a photographer well known for his light manipulation photos. We used long exposure to capture stunning light photos using various tools with lights. These photos can portray different moods and feelings of the subject.”
The Sydney International Equestrian Centre was the backdrop for this year's ISA Cross Country Championships this week and the 32-strong St Augustine’s squad enjoyed the challenging course that was bathed in sunshine – and relatively dry compared to recent years of muddy tracks and puddles.
Our Junior and Intermediate teams both finished in second place in their respective divisions, thanks to some strong runs by our Years 7, 8, 9, and 10 runners.
Overall, St Augustine’s finished as the 5th
highest boys school with congratulations going to Oakhill who dominated the day to take out all divisions and overall Boys Champion School. We will have a good representation at the NSWCIS Cross Country Carnival in June and we wish our boys all the best in that event.
A successful Broken Bay Cross Country event was held on Wednesday 24 May at Fagan Park, Galston...
15 competitors from St Augustine’s took part with 11yrs runners Tasman V (2nd) and Jude R (3rd) and 12yrs runners Jake W (1st) and Jasper P (3rd) medalling for their age groups, respectively.
7 boys in total will represent Broken Bay at the Polding Cross Country Championships.
Well done and congratulations boys!
