Overview
AFL was introduced to the St Augustine’s College Sport and Co-curricular Program in 2022 and is available to students in Years 5 to 10. The program forms part of the College’s winter sporting offerings and provides students with the opportunity to participate in structured inter-school AFL competition.
The AFL program sits within the College’s broader commitment to sport as a key element of student development, encouraging participation, teamwork and school representation.
Program Structure
Season: Terms 2 and 3
Points: 15
Training: Teams train one to two sessions per week, with sessions scheduled in the morning and/or afternoon depending on age group and level.
Competition: Teams compete in the Combined Schools AFL competition, run by NSW AFL (NSWAFL). Matches are played on Saturday mornings at various venues across Sydney
Program Approach
As with all sports at St Augustine’s College, the AFL program aims to provide a positive and inclusive sporting experience for students across a range of abilities.
Training sessions are designed to support:
-
skill development appropriate to age and experience
understanding of the game and its rules
-
teamwork and cooperation
-
enjoyment of physical activity and school sport
Coaching and Development
AFL training sessions focus on age-appropriate learning and participation. Students in lower year groups typically concentrate on developing confidence and foundational skills, while older students experience more structured training and competitive play as part of school fixtures.
The College’s sport programs are overseen by experienced staff who support students in balancing sport, academic commitments and wellbeing.
Competition and Participation
Participation in the Combined Schools AFL competition allows students to:
-
represent the College in organised inter-school fixtures
-
experience regular match play during the winter season
-
develop an understanding of team sport within a school environment
The AFL program is open to students of varying experience levels and complements participation in community or club sport, in line with College co-curricular expectations.
Uniform and Equipment
Specific uniform and equipment requirements for AFL are communicated to families during seasonal sign-ups and prior to the commencement of the season.
