20 Years of Saints Rowing: A Celebration of Pride, Passion and Performance

On Friday 14 March, the Saints Rowing community gathered at the Forest Hotel to celebrate a remarkable milestone - 20 years of Saints Rowing.

It was a night filled with pride and connection. Past and present rowers, families, coaches, and long-time supporters came together to reflect on the journey, from the program’s humble beginnings in 2005 to its achievements on national and international stages. It was a celebration of something far greater than results - it was a celebration of character, commitment and community.

Honouring the Legacy

Speeches throughout the night captured the essence of what makes Saints Rowing so special. Past parent Fabian D, Mr Burke from the College, and current coaches Mr Ungemach and Mrs Ungemach spoke warmly about the culture that has shaped the program - one built on perseverance, team spirit and a shared pursuit of excellence.

From early morning starts to national titles, every rower, parent, coach and supporter has played a role in building a legacy that continues to grow stronger each year.

Eyes on Nationals

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of team kits to our current rowers heading to the Australian National Championships in Tasmania. As these boys prepare to represent the College on the national stage, they do so carrying the hopes and support of an entire community:

Billy P, Jason C, Hamish W, Rory P, Ryder T, Henry O, Lachlan S, Jesse B, and Oscar - we’re proud of you and wish you every success in the week ahead.

20 Years of Remarkable Achievement

Over the past two decades, Saints Rowing has become one of Australia’s most respected schoolboy programs. A few highlights include:

  • 5 Junior World Champions

  • 9 Junior World Championship medals

  • The only all-school crew to win a World Championship for Australia (coxed four)

  • 17 Australian representatives across U19, U23 and Open levels

  • Representation in national teams every year from 2014 to 2024

  • 2 athletes invited to the National Training Centre

  • 1 Olympic qualifier

  • Named Top Australian School Boys Rowing Program in 2022 and 2023

  • 10 rowers selected for the NSW Kings Cup or Youth 8 crews

  • 24 NSW Pathways U19 selections in the past six years

  • More than 22 medals at the Australian National Championships

Adding to the excitement, three Old Boys - Nik, Joe and Josh - were named in the 2024 Kings Cup crew on the very night of the event. Current cox Ryder T. earned selection for the NSW Youth 8+, and both Mr Ungemach and Mrs Ungemach will be coaching at this year’s top national events.

Looking Forward

This anniversary was not only a celebration of the past - it was a powerful reminder of what lies ahead. With strong leadership, a supportive community and a new generation of rowers inspired by those who came before them, Saints Rowing is well placed to continue its tradition of excellence.

To all who have contributed to this 20-year journey - thank you. Your efforts have shaped a program that continues to inspire, challenge and unite.

Here’s to the next 20.
