SRC Students Engage in Social Justice at Vinnies Conference

At St Augustine’s College, nurturing young men to be compassionate, socially aware, and actively engaged in their communities is central to our mission. Recently, seven members of our Student Representative Council (SRC), accompanied by Ms Bignold and Ms Mackenzie, attended the Vinnies Secondary School Social Justice Conference at the Australian Catholic University (ACU). It was an experience that deeply resonated with our values and commitment to service.

Throughout the day, students participated in a series of workshops that explored pressing social issues, including homelessness, sustainability, housing insecurity, and the rising cost of living. These sessions broadened their understanding of the challenges faced by many Australians and also inspired them to consider how they can contribute meaningfully to solutions.

One of the most impactful sessions focused on the Vinnies Van, a program that goes beyond providing meals. Students learned how volunteers build genuine relationships with those experiencing homelessness, offering dignity and connection alongside practical support.

Other workshops explored innovative sustainability practices, such as the creation of Vinnies rugs from recycled plastic and the environmental benefits of thrifting. Students were introduced to Vinnies Finds, a new online platform promoting sustainable shopping.

The housing crisis and cost of living sessions were particularly powerful, highlighting the breadth of Vinnies’ support services, from helping families secure stable housing, to assisting with everyday expenses like groceries and veterinary bills.

To conclude the day, students were introduced to the Vinnies Service Medallion, a program designed to empower young people to engage with social justice issues in practical, accessible ways. Through this initiative, students are encouraged to reflect, lead, and take action, developing both their leadership skills and their capacity to be agents of change.

We are proud of our SRC students for embracing this opportunity with open hearts and minds. Their experience at the conference aligns with the College’s core values of Truth, Love and Community, and reminds us all of the role we can play as thoughtful, caring and contributing members of society.
