St Augustine’s College U15 Rugby Tour - A memorable Fiji journey, on and off the field

The recent U15 Rugby Tour of Fiji was more than a sporting event. It was a journey of growth, connection, and unforgettable moments. Over nine days, the St Augustine’s College squad - The Saints Barbarian XV - battled it out on the rugby field, and immersed themselves in the Fijian culture and spirit.

The tour started in Suva, where the team faced Suva Grammar School. A mixed bag of results - one win, one loss, and one draw - offered valuable insight into the local playing style: fast, physical, and fiercely competitive. From there, the team travelled to Sigatoka, affectionately known as ‘Rugby Town’ thanks to it being the heartland of Fijian rugby, for more games and cultural immersion.

One of the tour’s most memorable matches was against Lomary Catholic High School. The Saints Barbarian XV showed grit against a determined and disciplined opposition, particularly in the second half, but ultimately fell short in a 7-24 loss. The pattern of winning the second half in every tour match spoke volumes about the team’s resilience and fighting spirit.

Off the pitch, the tour was equally meaningful; the boys formed genuine connections with their Fijian peers whilst embracing the local culture and gaining a deeper understanding of the Fijian way of life. The boys also donated some rugby gear, which was received with gratitude, culminating in lessons about the power of sport and its ability to unite.

After nine days of travel, training, and team bonding, the boys returned home tired but inspired. The memories made in Fiji will stay with them long after the season ends. Experiences that taught humility, gratitude, and brotherhood are now etched into their minds as young men, athletes, and comrades.

Vinaka vakalevu, Fiji. Thank you for the hospitality.
