Starting Strong: Helping Year 7 Students Build Study Skills for High School Success

At St Augustine’s College, we understand that the transition to high school is a significant moment, not just for students, but for their families too. That’s why we invest in programs that help build confidence, independence, and positive learning habits from day one, and why our Academic Study Skills curriculum in Years 7 to 12 is so important.

Recently, our Year 7 families were invited to our Study Skills Evening, which was designed to support students as they begin their secondary school journey. Throughout the session, our guest speaker, Dr Prue Salter of Enhanced Learning Educational Services, provided practical, research-based strategies and advice to help students thrive academically as they journey through their high school years.

Families engaged in discussions where they explored what it takes to be an effective learner in a high school environment, from setting up an ideal study space at home, to managing time well, dealing with distractions, and breaking assignments into manageable steps. Dr Salter’s expertise provided invaluable insights to these conversations that will ultimately help our students feel more confident and efficient whilst they manage their workloads.

One of the most valuable aspects of the event was the opportunity for families to collectively reflect on current routines, therefore identifying some of the simple changes that could make a big difference. With a focus on communication, planning and shared expectations, the evening encouraged families to work as a team in supporting each student’s growth, while emphasising the importance of structure and routine.

As part of our wider Study Skills program, students and parents also received access to additional resources, including a video guide on preparing for tests using proven techniques such as study note creation, self-testing, and effective practicing. We also strongly encourage parents and students to review all the slides and handouts from the session, and to access the resources mentioned to create solid action plans for themselves. This all contributes to our sons’ pathways to independence and self-regulation.

More than just a presentation, the evening was a powerful example of how St Augustine’s College partners with families to build strong foundations for learning. As our Year 7 students begin to take ownership of their academic journey, they do so with the guidance, tools and support needed to succeed in school and beyond.
