Winter Reading Guide 2025
THE QUIET EDGE:
Why Boys Who Read Over the Holidays Come Back Stronger
When the winter holidays roll around, most boys are ready for a break — and understandably so. School life is intense: full of assessments, routines, sports, co-curriculars, and social demands. The temptation to switch off entirely and lean heavily into screens, gaming, or endless scrolling is strong. And while rest is essential, there’s another, quieter way to recharge that offers long-term benefits: reading.
Reading gives boys something that few other activities can. It develops attention span, improves sleep quality, supports emotional regulation, builds language, and provides a powerful sense of escape and control which is especially important during adolescence, when so much feels out of their hands.
Just 15 minutes of reading a day has been shown to significantly enhance vocabulary acquisition, critical thinking, and even stress recovery.
"Reading gives boys something screens never can: calm, depth, and control."
But for many boys, reading can feel like a school-based obligation rather than a meaningful or enjoyable part of their lives. That’s where family encouragement, access to the right books, and a relaxed, supportive approach can make all the difference.
Studies continue to show that by the time boys reach adolescence, they are reading less frequently — and with less enthusiasm — than girls. This reading gap is not just about test scores; it affects their academic confidence, their capacity to communicate effectively, and even their future pathways. Yet it is also completely reversible.
By reframing reading as something that is for them — not something that is done to them — we begin to rebuild that bridge. The most effective way to do this? Show them that reading can be casual, interest-driven, and 100% on their own terms.
Reading doesn’t have to mean novels (although we love those too). It can include:
- Graphic novels
- Biographies of sporting heroes or musicians
- Audiobooks and podcasts with transcripts
- Survival stories, adventure thrillers, or mysteries
- How-to guides, game manuals, or books on entrepreneurship
"It doesn’t matter what they read. It matters that they start."
Reading builds an internal world. It develops empathy, expands language, and strengthens focus. It also gives boys a much-needed mental break from the fast pace of the digital world. Unlike scrolling, reading isn’t designed to overstimulate. It helps regulate the nervous system, which is especially important for teens navigating a loud and demanding online culture.
You absolutely do not have to be an expert in literature to help your son grow as a reader. You just need to make space, offer encouragement, and model the value of reading in everyday life. Here are a few strategies that can help over the winter holidays:
- Offer real choice – Let them browse the Reading Guide and choose what stands out. Don’t worry if it is not a “classic.”
- Create the environment – Make sure they’ve got somewhere comfortable to read—on the couch, in bed, outside in the sun with plenty of layers.
- Reduce pressure – They don’t need to finish every book. Skimming, swapping, or dipping in and out is okay.
- Model it – Sit down with your own book, newspaper, or eReader—even for 10 minutes.
- Bring books into daily life – Listen to audiobooks together on drives. Stop at a bookshop or library.
These small choices add up. Boys who continue reading through adolescence tend to develop stronger communication skills, more curiosity, and better mental stamina. They also tend to report higher levels of well-being. Reading gives them the tools to think more deeply, empathise more broadly, and navigate life more confidently.
Contrary to the old stereotype, reading isn’t uncool. Many of the world’s most admired men—leaders, athletes, and creatives—are avid readers.
LeBron James has launched reading initiatives across the U.S. and credits books with keeping him mentally sharp. Barack Obama releases an annual reading list filled with thrillers, literary fiction, and memoirs. Tom Holland is well known for carrying novels to film sets and reads between takes.
Closer to home, Adam Goodes, former AFL player and Australian of the Year, has publicly supported children’s literacy programs and shared his passion for storytelling. Richard Flanagan, winner of the Booker Prize, writes powerful fiction and speaks about the role reading plays in shaping identity. And Craig Foster, former Socceroo and now human rights advocate, often cites reading as central to his thinking, empathy, and leadership.
“The boys who read quietly during the break often return with something others don’t — momentum”
So while we want our boys to rest, play, and relax these holidays, we also want them to have access to that quiet edge — the one that comes from getting lost in a good book.
Let this Winter Reading Guide be that invitation. It’s not about ticking off a list. It’s about opening a door—and giving your son the time, space and encouragement to step through.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF POWER - A MEMOIR - BY JACINTA ARDERN
What if we could redefine leadership? What if kindness came first? Jacinda Ardern grew up the daughter of a police officer, a Mormon girl plagued by self-doubt. But as prime minister she commanded worldwide respect for her empathetic leadership, made political history, and changed our assumptions about what a global leader can be. When Jacinda Ardern became Prime Minister at age thirty-seven, the world took notice.
But it was her compassionate, powerful response to the 2019 Christchurch Mosque attacks, resulting in swift gun-control reforms, that exemplified a new kind of leadership-one that is caring and effective. She guided New Zealand through unprecedented challenges-a volcanic eruption, a major biosecurity breach, and a global pandemic-and advanced visionary new policies to address climate change, reduce child poverty, and secure historic international trade deals. She did this all while juggling first-time motherhood in the public eye.
She is a global icon, and now in this remarkable book she shares her story, from the struggles to the surprises, including the full details of her decision to step down during her sixth year as Prime Minister.
Jacinda Ardern is a model for anyone who has ever doubted themselves or has aspired to lead with compassion, conviction, and courage. A Different Kind of Power is more than a political memoir; it's an insight into how it feels to lead, ultimately asking- What if you, too, are capable of more than you ever imagined?
THREE WILD DOGS AND THE TRUTH - BY MARKUS ZUSAK
There's a madman dog beside me, and the hounds of memory ahead of us. It's love and beasts and wild mistakes, and regret, but never to change things... What happens when the Zusak’s’ open their family home to three big, wild, pound- hardened dogs - Reuben, a wolf at your door with a hacksaw; Archer, blond, beautiful, deadly; and the rancorously smiling Frosty, who walks like a rolling thunderstorm?
The answer can only be chaos: there are street fights, park fights, public shaming’s, property trashing, bodily injuries, stomach pumping, purest comedy, shocking tragedy, and carnage that needs to be seen to be believed ... not to mention the odd police visit at some ungodly hour of the morning.
There is a reckoning of shortcomings and failure, a strengthening of will, but most important of all, an explosion of love - and the joy and recognition of family. From one of the world's great storytellers comes a tender, motley and exquisitely written memoir about the human need for both connection and disorder; a love letter to the animals who bring hilarity and beauty - but also the visceral truth of the natural world - straight to our doors and into our lives, and change us forever.
THE DIARY OF A CEO - BY STEVEN BARTLETT
This is not a book about business strategy. Strategy changes like the seasons. This is a book about something much more permanent. At the very heart of all the success and failure I've been exposed to - both my own entrepreneurial journey and through the thousands of interviews I've conducted on my podcast - are a set of principles that can stand the test of time, apply to any industry, and be used by anyone who is search of building something great or becoming someone great. These are the fundamental laws that will ensure excellence. They are rooted in psychology and behavioural science, are based on the wisdom of tens of thousands of people I've surveyed across every continent and age group, and of course, drawn from the conversations I've had on my chart-topping podcast with the world's most successful people. These laws will work now or in 100 years from now. Are you ready to get started?

SOURCE CODE - MY BEGINNINGS - BY BILL GATES
Everyone is programmed a little differently, and Bill Gates' unique insight led to business triumphs that are now widely known: the twenty-year-old who dropped out of Harvard to start a software company that became an industry giant and changed the way the world works and lives; the billionaire many times over who turned his attention to philanthropic pursuits to address climate change, global health, and U.S. education. Source Code is not about Microsoft or the Gates Foundation or the future of technology. It’s the human, personal story of how Bill Gates became who he is today: his childhood, his early passions and pursuits. It’s the story of his principled grandmother and ambitious parents, his first deep friendships and the sudden death of his best friend; of his struggles to fit in and his discovery of a world of coding and computers in the dawn of a new era; of embarking in his early teens on a path that took him from midnight escapades at a nearby computer center to his college dorm room, where he sparked a revolution that would change the world. Bill Gates tells this, his own story, for the first time: wise, warm, revealing, it’s a fascinating portrait of an American life.

THE BELBURD - BY NARDI SIMPSON

We need to be thankful that it makes us. When it comes to love, it's all about being. Not remembering so much.' Ginny Dilboong is a young poet, fierce and deadly. She's making sense of the world and her place in it, grappling with love, family and the spaces in which to create her art. Like powerful women before her, Ginny hugs the edges of waterways, and though she is a daughter of Country, the place that shapes her is not hers. Determined and brave, Ginny seeks to protect the truth of others while learning her own. The question is how? And, all the while, others are watching. Some old, some new. They are the sound of the belburd as it echoes through the world; the sound of cars and trucks and trains. They are in trees and paper and the shape of ideas. They are the builder and the built. Everything, even Ginny, is because of them. The Belburd is a powerful story that shows us we are all connected from before we began to long after we begin again.

A WALK IN THE WOODS - BY BILL BRYSON
The Appalachian Trail covers 14 states, and over 2,000 miles. It stretches along the East Coast of the United States, from Maine in the north to Georgia in the south. It is famous for being the longest continuous footpath in the world. (Compare this with the Pennine Way, which is a mere 250 miles long.) It snakes through some of the wildest and most spectacular landscapes in America, as well as through some of its most poverty-stricken and primitive backwoods areas - Redneck country - Moonshine, Lil' Abner, there's bears in them thar hills. Remember the film Deliverance? God only knows what possessed Bill Bryson, a reluctant adventurer if ever there was one, to undertake this gruelling hike. Perhaps it was just a long-held ambition to lose weight: he has lost two stone so far. As he recently wrote from the trail to his publisher: 'Speaking of vigorous exercise, boy have I just had some. Maine was a bitch. I want you to come back and walk it with me so that when you die if you go to hell you will be able to say: "Call this hell? Try walking across Maine in August. "'Reared in the tradition of Mark Twain, James Thurber and S.J. Perelman, Bryson used his many years in Britain to soak up a peculiarly English sense of irony and humour and to hone a laugh-out-loud style that is uniquely, hilariously, his own.

TRUE GRIT - BY BEAR GRYLLS
Bear Grylls knows what it takes to survive. But he's not the first. Take the American bombardier Louis Zamperini, who survived 47 days stranded at sea by catching and killing hungry sharks and drinking the warm blood of albatrosses ? only to be captured by the Japanese and horrifically tortured for years in their most brutal POW camps...Or Marcus Luttrell, a Navy SEAL who single-handedly took on a Taliban regiment before dragging his bleeding, bullet-ridden body for days through the harsh mountains of Afghanistan... Or Nando Parrado, one of the survivors of a horrific air-crash high in the ice-bound Andes, who only lived because he was willing to eat the flesh of his dead companions...In this gripping new book, Bear tells the stories of the adventurers, explorers, soldiers and spies whose refusal to quit in the most extreme situations has inspired him throughout his life. Some of them make uncomfortable reading - survival is rarely pretty. But all of them are tales of eye-watering bravery, death-defying resilience and extraordinary mental toughness by men and women who have one thing in common: true grit.
